We Are Not Erik Petersen

This week's competition questions:
1- What time did we take this photo?
2- What was the time in real life?
(If you look back to the last few times we have done a photo at our desk, you will notice that we were later than usual. This was due to lighting difficulties with our handwritten signs, and so Daniel printed off our cool new ones, that did photograaph).

Today it is Mrs Petersen's birthday, and so Erik wasn't allowed out to play. When we went out last Wednesday, we had talked about doing a pre-record on Saturday but he couldn't make that either. Not to worry, The Sunday Alternative soldiered on regardless with Bainy, my friend and colleague from Trent Sound's Wednesday show Notts Live in my passenger seat. This is Trent Sound's first crossover presentation, which we likened to The Jetsons and The Flintstones appearing in the same cartoon, or when you used to spot a character from The Beano in The Dandy. Andy Haynes, Bainy's co-host, now has to do a show with Erik, and we tried to come up with a strategy for mixing up all the shows that are presented by two people, so that we all get to do a crossover show. Castle Rock, (Tuesdays), Notts Live, (Wednesday), Not On Your Telly, (Sunday, before we go on), Cabinet Of Curiosity, (Sunday), and Nottingham LACE, (Saturdays) all need to be mixed up. This might require a big piece of paper and a detailed plan stuck to the wall.

We also discussed cover versions, and how they should only be allowed if the person covering is able to re-interpret the song in question. Some of the songs in the setlist below should illustrate our point. With covers a recurring subject, tonight was the debut outing for a new feature on the show titled Louie Smells Like Rock and Roll in which I attempt to play my entire collection of cover versions of 'Louie Louie', 'I Love Rock and Roll', and Smells Like Teen Spirit'. This is of course something that will run and run, but the beauty is that I can take the feature with me when BBC 6Music finally get round to offering Erik and I the Saturday morning slot.

I forgot to announce our plans for a Whoopee John tribute band, but as we discussed it in the pub on Wednesday, it perhaps is only fair that I save it for when Erik is back. Funnily enough, Bainy forgot to invite us onto Notts Live for a session.

No pies, No Whoopee, Just Me And An Idea!

A solo outing tonight for The Sunday Alternative, in a show that was pre-recorded last Wednesday as I was on my way back to Nottingham as the show started. Sadly, Erik couldn't make it to the pre-record so it is just me. As always when I'm on my own, the show is more music focused as I can't bounce comic riffs with myself can I?

The Award Winning Pork Pie, The Hostage, And Telling The Band We Killed Their Manager.

Nobody mentioned my 1990s 't-shirt over long sleeved' look so I think I got away with it.

Another textbook example of what the Saturday morning 10am-1pm show on BBC6Music should be sounding like. The Barnum Meserve became a future pub quiz question, if a future pub quiz-master asks who were the first band to appear on both my Sherwood Radio show (that particular show is available to listen to here), and on The Sunday Alternative? Jake Morley doesn't count as he did an outside song on location in the Sherwood Radio days. I bet someone in the pub answers Jake and starts an argument. I can't stand how pub quizzes of the future are so competitive.

The Barnum Meserve talked about their new E.P. and upcoming gigs, and as a special treat, they offered to kill a deer for us to celebrate their set at Splendour. For listeners outside Nottingham, Splendour is held in the grounds of a stately home with roaming deer. I try and cater for our international listeners by talking about Nottingham. We only have a small studio, so a dead deer might have to go on the roof of the studio as a mascot. The guys took it rather well when we broke the news that their manager Chris Underwood had died some weeks earlier. (Not really, it's a back reference).

The show was easy for me this week, as we had Nottingham LACE co-presenter Rapunzel MAP in to learn how to drive the desk in preparation for Jason not being available to steer the good ship LACE next week. We riffed on her being a hostage, and she communicated only by writing notes. All I had to do was talk, as I had no knobs to twiddle, (stop it).

Our campaign to get Whoopee John into the nation's affections continued, as did our pork pie review feature, which this week contained a lovely homemade pie from a real butcher. The verdict was a resounding thumbs up for Mrs King's Pork Pies.

Competition time, what time did we attempt to pretend that we didn't know we were being photographed?

One Percent More Pork Than Last Week

Despite what this picture may tell you, Erik does know how to wear a pair of headphones. This week's competition question, what time of night did we pose for this picture? No prize!

If a flimsy idea for a feature is worth doing once, it is worth doing until the premise wears thin. Once the premise is thin enough, we can stretch it further until it fizzles out altogether. Unfortunately, I just don't know when to stop. It was week two of our attempted feature on pork pie testing, this week they came from Tesco. I have to say that they were slightly better than Asda's last week, although they still weren't exactly butcher quality. Also, these Tesco pies had 31% pork, compared to Asda's 30%. My ideal find would be a pork pie containing 32% pork for next week.

I was worried that we had a lot to live up to this week, as last week we produced two solid hours of radio gold. Surely we couldn't do that again? Luckily, we could, the show just gets better and better and tonight was another gold-dust sprinkled piece of radio history. BBC 6Music still haven't been in touch, which I'm starting to realise is their loss, if they are too blind/stupid/arrogant to offer us the Saturday 10am-1pm slot.

Throughout the show we once again promoted Whoopie John, who I am going to try and make famous despite being dead. Terry Wogan managed it with Eva Cassidy. Other subjects included writing for The Nottingham Evening Post, (as I still call it), a pretentious new pub that opened in Hockley, my appearance on the BBC, our pitch to BBC4, monorails, and my idea for an interactive radio game. In keeping with my habit of not returning to subjects, we completely forgot to pay tribute to Davy Jones of The Monkees. We also became the first alternative/indie/punk radio show to have a long discussion about Rick Astley, mainly so I could tell the joke I have been working on.

Pork Pies, Boiler Maintenance And Happy Birthday Johnny Cash

For some reason, we forgot to do a photo with Jake Morley after he performed in the studio with us. So here is a cheeky picture of him setting up.

We were on excellent form tonight, and it is a scandal that BBC 6Music haven't yet given us the Saturday 10am-1pm slot. Maybe the listeners should refuse to pay their TV Licence until they see sense. It isn't like they aren't informed about the show, this is just ignorance on their part.

Jake Morley joined us in the studio, which was a session that I have particularly been looking forward to. Not that I don't enjoy the live acts, but Jake is the founding member of my 'I played them before 6Music' club.

We inadvertently became pork pie experts, based on the fact that I brought in a cheap nasty packet of the things from Asda. This was quite a good thread that I'm hoping to carry on with, if 6Music don't want us, then we could go on This Morning with pork pie analysis. Erik told a rather sad pork pie related story, we touched on boiler trouble, I accidentally made a wanking reference, and much much more!

The mid-range Asda pork pie was okay. The meat had a reasonable texture although the overall pie was very peppery.

Just Me

I was flying solo tonight, Erik putting his commitment to The Evening Post, (as I still call it) first. It was a bit of a blow as when BBC6Music listen, (and Elizabeth Mahoney, the radio critic from The Guardian), they won’t experience the full potential of the show. Our suitability for the 6Music Saturday 10am-1pm slot is based on our double act, as that time slot is very much the comedy slot, having been presented by Adam and Joe, and Richard Herring and Andrew Collins, Andrew Collins and Josie Long and now Peter Serefinowic for six weeks.
Erik will be back next week, and we are also plotting to start a series of podcasts independent of Trent Sound.

I wasn’t totally alone however, as I had a live session guest, Nottingham singer/songwriter Will Jeffery.

As with my solo shows, there was a heavier emphasis on music. I tend to slip back into my John Peel mode when I’m on my own.

Rest In Peace Our Not Really Dead Friend

Erik was back with a vengeance tonight, and the show rolled along on fine comedy form. We have really established a fine double act now that I hope continues. The BBC are still dragging their heels over offering us the Saturday 10am-1pm slot on 6Music, having just given the comedian Peter Serafinowicz six week run. I assume that we’ll be taking over from him.

Sadly, the booked turn, The Barnum Meserve had to cancel due to flu, but we still provided a solid gold two hours. We have such a stream of subjects to riff on that I can barely remember everything about it, but we mentioned myspace, face book, accordions, Whoopee John, (two interlinked recurring themes of the show) and even returned to the Bobbersmill Transport Cafe. The big topic of the night was our attempt to start the rumour that my old co-presenter Chris Underwood had been killed, overshadowing, (for us) the death today of Whitney Houston.

Chris Underwood is not dead.

Yes he is.

No he isn’t.

My daughter was listening tonight, as she is staying with us for half term, and as the show is on a school night she doesn’t often get to hear it. She seems to think that all we talk about is dead people, and given that we opened with Whoopee John, and killed a friend (albeit fictitiously), she had a point. For some reason, Betty White came into our conversation. We had already pointed out that everyone we mention dies, so went to great lengths not to suggest she was dead. The last remaining Golden Girl is very much alive, and especially as she is more likely to sue us that Chris. The whole Internet rumour riff gave me yet another chance to air my now legendary Adam West story, which I am still very proud of. I also made a comment about September 11th being the date of the first show I did on Trent Sound, and that being what September 11th will be remembered for. It’s funny because it isn’t the only reason.

Two Men And A Baby, On BBC4, Trekking Around Bulgaria, Talking About Opera

Tonight's show was a pre-recorded effort, which we did yesterday afternoon. I don't want to have to do pre-records to often, but as I'm unavailable tonight, it kept the continuity going. It would have been a shame to have had to have got a stand in, when Erik and I are on the brink of international stardom.

We were joined in the studio by Erik's daughter Anya, who was an absolute delight. A really cute little girl, who has such a sense of timing, she was able to stop making noises the instant the song started and the microphone went off. It was funny watching her play a kind of punch-ball game with the microphone when her daddy was attempting to talk into it.

We discussed our attempts to join the rank of the celebrity, and although BBC 6Music haven't been in touch yet, we have some ideas. Based on a tweet I received in the week, I pitched a chat show where I get to fight (and hopefully beat up) celebrities that I don't like. While I'm beating them, I ask them questions about their book/DVD/tour, whatever. Micheal Parkinson never had a punch up with his guests, I'm inventing a new concept in talk shows.

Erik wants to do high brow documentaries, which I have promised we can do after we've made our money doing pantomime and opening school fetes.

The BBC Are Listening To This Shit?

After three solo shows, Erik Petersen finally finished his epic Christmas holiday as far as The Sunday Alternative is concerned. It was good to have him back with me, and I have missed him. We have developed a double act of sorts, and by rights should have our own television show, movie deal, and range of breakfast cereals. But for now, the radio show is the only way we can satisfy our fans.

If my canvassing worked, then someone high up at BBC 6Music was listening tonight, and are beating a path to our door to ask us to do the Saturday 10am-1pm slot.

News: If you like the bantering gibberish between Erik and myself, but feel that the records get in the way and that we need more swearing, then fear not. We are currently making plans to bring out a regular podcast. We will carry on with the podcast when 6Music give us the Saturday gig.

We were joined by Nottingham musician Marc Reeves, who was in to promote his new album and to perform a few tracks.

Erik and I discussed the new range of Sunday Alternative merchandising, in particular the fez, the mystery of 'sos', Spud-U-Like, Whoopie John, and eating crocodiles. Or it might have been alligator. Also, I decided that if we kept banging on about taking the Saturday 10am-1pm slot on BBC 6Music, then eventually someone would believe it and have no choice but to give us the gig.

Discombobulated

Another solo outing, hopefully my last one as I think Erik is back next week. I travelled back to Nottingham from Teesside to do the show, and it took me a while to settle in. From arriving in Nottingham, having a shower and eating my tea I was then straight out the door and getting a tram to Bulwell for the show. I normally spend some time on a Sunday afternoon preparing, (honest), but I didn't get time. Luckily I arrive at the studio an hour before my show starts, so I had least had time to get some music together, make coffee and do some self promoting tweeting and face-booking (fifteen days into 2012 and I am still logging into facebook like it's 2008).

After a shaky start, as my brain wasn't really in gear, I got into the swing of it and produced a good quality two hours of music. When I'm doing the show alone there is more music and less talk.

Happy New Year

My first show of 2012 was a solo affair, Chris Underwood was at a party and Erik Petersen had taken the drastic step of leaving the country to avoid co-presenting duties, having given some bollocks about going home for Christmas.

I continued the Christmas number one countdown, which was a mistake that I had committed to. The first half of this countdown on the last show featured some good music among the not so good, this show showed that the not so good overruled during the 1980s and 1990s.

The Sunday Alternative will return to normal service next week, and the unsigned bands, alternative classics, indie hits, rarities and general John Peel-ish credibility will eventually wash away the memories of the Christmas show when I played The Spice Girls.

I gave up at this point, although I played Tears For Fears original version of 'Mad World' (Christmas number one for Michael Andrews and Gary Jules in 2003) and Jeff Buckley's version of 'Hallelujah', which was criminally covered by Alexandra Burke and was Christmas number one in 2008. The show ended without me saying goodbye, as I perfectly timed the 2009 Christmas number one, Rage Against The Machine's 'Killing In The Name' to fade out for the news just before the "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me" bit.

Tell Them Johnny Cash Sent You

Tonight was The Sunday Alternative Christmas party, a lavish affair, black tie and everything. Actually it wasn't. I met Erik Petersen for pints of Guinness beforehand in an empty pub in Bulwell. The fact that the barman announced that he would close as soon as we left was incentive enough to order another round.

To say this was my first show with a good drink inside me, (Sunday lunch doesn't count), it was a fantastic two hours of radio that if you missed, Santa will kill a baby rabbit.

The theme of the show was Christmas number ones, which started in 1952 with 'Here In My Heart' by Al Martino. This was the first song in which sales figures came from records, rather than sheet music. I mentioned how I correctly predicted how the download rule would open the chart to subversion, despite being two years early. I managed to get as far as 1974, which was 'Lonely This Christmas'. The Christmas number one run through will continue on New Years Day, no show next week as it is Christmas Day.

We also spoke of Cliff Richard, and a little story that I don't like to talk about, about how I saved Christmas. It was strange to be playing such a musical departure from my usual output, and between this and my January 1st show, the comparisons with John Peel should fade away. I'll be back with cool indie music and unsigned bands on January 8th.

Tonight's show was a very enjoyable one indeed, in which I was joined again by Erik Petersen from The Nottingham Evening Post, (as I still insist on calling it) and comedian/singer-songwriter William Tennant.

Erik came on my show a couple of weeks ago to discuss his campaign to save Broadmarsh Wimpy, and stayed for the whole show. He settled in well, was relaxed at the mic, and has a lightening comic ability that I can work with. So I asked him to come back and do it all again. The results were again amazing, so hopefully he will become a full member of team Sunday Alternative.

William coped very well amid the chaos of the show, and having driven from Manchester to make the appearance, joined in with our bantering as if we were a seasoned comedy troupe.

Wimpy Rants And 1980s Shopping!

A fun show today in which I didn't play half the music I'd lined up, but it didn't seem to matter. Erik Petersen from The Nottingham Evening Post, (as I still call it) joined me to discuss his campaign to save the Wimpy in Broadmarsh from closure. Wimpy in Broadmarsh is under no threat of closure, this is just in case!
Based on my blog from a few days ago, tonight's theme was turning Broadmarsh into a 1980s themed shopping centre. We had tweets suggesting Radio Rentals, (which I had to explain to Erik), Chelsea Girl, Fine Fair, C&A, and the Broadmarsh Co-Op. I also explained Spud-U-Like to Erik, which given the success of Nottingham's very own Dinner Jackets, we know could come back!

Somehow, we managed to drift off the subject and brought in bad spelling, text speak, facebook, Christmas porn, and general other bug bears. In the midst of all this, Chris turned up with some treats courtesy of We Are Delish.

If this doesn't get Chris and Erik a modelling job with We Are Delish, then there's no justice.

The campaign to save Wimpy grew from a peaceful protest to an all out blitz spirited uprising, with tweets coming in suggesting an 'occupy' movement with tents outside Wimpy, a naked flash mob, (not entirely sure why being naked is so important but if it makes a difference), a charity single by Long Dead Signal, (managed by Chris, who might stop answering the phone until this all blows over), and a mass singalong inside the branch. That would be great publicity for the campaign, and ironic that we all got barred from the place we were trying to save, despite nobody suggesting they needed saving. If you know what I mean.
